The Palestinian Center for Prisoners Advocacy salutes Palestinian journalists on the Palestinian Journalist Loyalty Day, honoring those who carry the word and the image in confronting the occupation and who pay with their freedom to convey the truth and expose Israeli occupation crimes against the Palestinian people.
The center says about 45 Palestinian journalists remain detained in Israeli prisons, among roughly 9,300 prisoners and detainees, including 1,300 convicted prisoners and 51 female prisoners. This comes amid one of the most dangerous campaigns of systematic targeting of Palestinian media, in which journalists face arbitrary arrest, harsh interrogation and the denial of their basic rights — a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and press freedom.
The center notes that Israeli authorities continue to apply administrative detention against a number of journalists without charge or trial, in an apparent attempt to silence the truth and prevent the documentation of crimes and violations against Palestinian civilians, in clear contravention of the Geneva Conventions and international charters that guarantee the protection of journalists during conflicts.
The center stresses that imprisoned journalists in Israeli jails represent a living example of the price paid for truth. Their continued detention under harsh conditions — including solitary confinement and the denial of family visits and medical care — constitutes an ongoing crime and a stain on the conscience of a silent international community. On this day, detained journalists deliver their message from behind bars, affirming that the free word cannot be shackled and that truth remains stronger than prison and chains.
On this occasion, and in light of the fierce Israeli campaign against Palestinian journalists, the Palestinian Center for Prisoners Advocacy emphasizes the following demands:
First: The immediate and unconditional release of all journalists detained in Israeli prisons.
Second: A call on international and human rights institutions to uphold their legal and moral responsibilities to protect Palestinian journalists.
Third: An appeal to international media outlets to intensify coverage of the issue of imprisoned journalists and expose occupation practices against them.
Fourth: On Palestinian Journalist Loyalty Day, an affirmation that Palestinian journalism will remain the voice of the people, and that the arrest and detention of journalists will not succeed in obscuring the truth.
