The fact that a minister responsible for Israel\u2019s prison system entered the cells of women deprived of their freedom and surrounded by prison guards, then proceeded to threaten them in front of cameras, reveals the extent to which Israel\u2019s treatment of Palestinian prisoners has deteriorated. Abuse is no longer carried out away from public view; it has become something to boast about openly and use for incitement, while sending a clear message to prison guards to continue and intensify repression and humiliation.<\/p>\n
Conditions facing Palestinian prisoners have exceeded all limits of cruelty. Repeated testimonies describe beatings, torture, starvation, medical neglect, isolation, deprivation of hygiene supplies, clothing and family visits, in addition to daily assaults and humiliation. Ben-Gvir\u2019s actions cannot be separated from this reality; rather, they provide clear political cover for the continuation and expansion of these practices.<\/p>\n
The Center stresses that the violations committed against Palestinian male and female prisoners cannot be reduced to the individual conduct of a prison guard or official. They form part of a broader policy for which the Israeli government and prison authorities bear responsibility, and represent a form of organized state terror against people who are entirely under their control and responsibility.<\/p>\n
The Center also warns against turning Palestinian prisoners into tools for revenge and domestic political competition as Israeli elections approach. The further deterioration of detention conditions and the stripping away of Palestinian prisoners\u2019 rights have increasingly become a means of political posturing before the Israeli public, in a political race whose price is paid by prisoners with their bodies, health and dignity.<\/p>\n
The female prisoners whom Ben-Gvir stood before, threatening them and boasting in front of cameras, are not electoral material or props for political propaganda. They are women entitled to rights, dignity and protection under international law. Their testimonies about conditions inside Israeli prisons must be heard by the world and subjected to investigation and accountability, rather than being allowed to pass like so many other violations amid international silence and inaction.<\/p>\n
The Center considers the continued silence over what is taking place inside Israeli prisons a stain that will continue to haunt the international community and institutions that possess tools of pressure and protection but fail to use them, particularly now that many of these violations are being committed openly, filmed, and even publicly celebrated without fear of accountability.<\/p>\n
The Palestinian Center for Prisoners Advocacy calls on the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and international human rights and women\u2019s organizations to take immediate action to protect Palestinian female and male prisoners, secure access to prisons and meet detainees away from the supervision of prison guards, investigate violations, threats, policies of starvation, torture and medical neglect, and hold those responsible to account.<\/p>\n
Continued delay means leaving thousands of Palestinian prisoners alone to face conditions that grow harsher by the day, while Israeli prisons enter a period of abuse that surpasses even the darkest chapters of history.<\/p>\n
